We've been searching through hundreds, if not thousands of homes in search for our dream home in the countryside and we want to bring them to you!
Here at Old House Japan, we'll continue to search for the best "akiya" also known as vacant and low cost homes to you. Our goal will continue to bring you the best cheap houses within Japan but also check out the "free" homes available if you're ready to put your own finishing touches on your dream home!

Since my teenage years, I’ve dreamed of visiting Japan, and in the fall of 2019, that dream finally came true. On that unforgettable trip, my husband David proposed to me at the iconic Fushimi-Inari Taisha, surrounded by the striking torii gates that have captivated so many. But beyond the magic of our engagement, we were both deeply moved by Japan’s culture, natural beauty, and the kindness of its people.
What started as a visit quickly became a lifelong pursuit. Over the years, we returned again and again—searching for hidden towns, learning the language, and falling even more in love with the country. We’ve since made Japan our home and now live in Tokyo, where we continue to explore, connect, and grow. Along the way, we’ve humbly gone through the home purchase process many times and understand both the excitement and the challenges of it.
While we’re still searching for our forever home, our journey has only strengthened our resolve—and we hope Old Houses Japan helps you take your own first step toward finding yours.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been captivated by Japanese culture. When my wife, Victoria, and I booked our trip to Japan in 2019, I had no idea just how deeply it would shape the course of our lives. I proposed to her in the heart of Kyoto—and from that moment on, I knew Japan was where I wanted to build our future.
Since then, we’ve traveled extensively throughout the country, eventually making the move to Tokyo where we now reside. Along the way, we’ve humbly navigated the home buying process many times and have grown deeply familiar with the joys—and hurdles—of finding and restoring akiya.
Creating Old Houses Japan has been a dream come true. Our goal is to help people like us—who may be working with a budget but share a deep love for Japan—find their own piece of this incredible country. Join us on this journey as we continue to explore, connect, and bring new life to old homes across Japan. There’s so much more to come.
